World's Most Famous Merlot: Masseto 2004 in the top 11

The World's most Famous Merlot, an award established in the United States, brings together the world's most important Merlots, to be judged by a panel of 90 tasters (including wine writers, winemakers, and enologists from many countries). At this year's competition, which included such excellent wines as Chateau Certan de May 1995, Château Trotanoy 1998, Château Petrus 2001, Pahlmeyer 1997, Messorio 1998, Pahlmeyer 1997, Blankiet Estate 2003, and Redigaffi 2004, the first three spots on the podium were occupied by Masseto 2004, Piedistallo 2003, and Verité 2002. The wines were also celebrated by Michel Rolland, a consulting enologist for some of the world's most famed wineries, who was present for the event. Anthony Gismondi, one of Canada's most influential wine critics, moderated the tasting.
